Celebrate Where You Live in Song Popular music has produced many great songs from Artists writing about the places they live or maybe long to be. As part of the Reading Fringe Festival we are offering local (within a 30 mile radius of Reading) Songwriters, Poets and Musicians the chance to put ‘where they come from’ firmly on the map in ‘The Land of Song’. The competition is open to all styles of music; it doesn’t matter if you’re not a great singer/musician or if you only have limited equipment to demo your work on. A simple home recording is fine, what we are looking for here is the quality of the song not the performance. It is also ok for you to get someone else to perform the song but it must be all your and (if appropriate) your songwriting partners work. When you have completed your composition it must be submitted along with a copy of the lyrics either as an MP3 to songs@readingfringefestival.com or on a CD to Songwriting Competition, Reading Fringe Festival, PO Box 8034, Reading, RG6 9EA by no later than 10 August 2006. Only one entry per song writer please. Once we have received the entries our panel of experts will pick what they consider ten songs they feel best captures the spirit of the project and the artists will be invited to perform their work at PlugnPlay, Reading on Sunday 20 August as part of the Reading Fringe Festival. The overall winner will be chosen from that and have the chance to record her/his song at a top professional studio in Reading as well as having it played on local radio stations. Whether you are writing songs already, are a solo artist in a band or if are a complete beginner this competition is open to you. There will also be Songwriting workshops run over the Festival that you are welcome to attend if you wish to perfect your skills. We held an extremely successful launch event on April 5th at Plug'n'Play, who were kind enough to give us the whole venue for free!
The aim of the night was to tell some of the venues, media, promoters or whoever else we could think of about what we were planning on doing this year. In the end just having all those people in the same room got a few events organised, at least in princple, on the night!
We know there were a number of people we'd have loved to come who couldn't make it and there are bound to be people out there that didn't know about the launch, because we don't know who you are yet. We'd love to hear from you so please get in touch. Please take a look at the contact us and how to get involved pages.
Linda Serck of BBC Berkshire attended the Fringe Festival Launch party and she's written a lovely piece about it. Read the full story here.
We've also been featured in the Reading Chronicle. See their coverage here
Thanks from everyone involved in the Fringe go to Plug'n'Play for the venue and Mr Fogg, Mark Handley and the Bone Idols and Six Nation State who gave up their time for free.
